After the end of slavery, blacks were free and had the right to vote, but they were oppressed by white supremacist and state laws that restricted their voting rights. Many great minds rose from the shadows and spoke against these injustice, but the one that stands out the most is Marcus Garvey. Garvey created a huge impact in the African-American history, but his stubbornness and ignorance lead to his self-destruction. As a young boy, in Jamaica, Garvey was inspired by the works of Booker T Washington especially by the book â€Å"Up from Slavery†. From a young age, Garvey believed that is was his destiny to speak in front of millions this was one of the many reasons why he became an activist. Throughout his lifetime he made enemies with other African- American activist, like W. E. B Du Bois, who criticized Garvey and his ideology. Antigone As the play begins Antigone is just meeting up with her sister and is telling her about the decree of King Creon. Antigone and her sister, Ismene, had two brothers who had killed each other on the battlefield. One of their brothers, Eteocles, was buried with the military honors of a soldier’s funeral, and yet the other, Polyneices, was to be left out to be food for the carrion birds since he died fighting against the city of Thebes. King Creon forbade publicly for anyone to bury the body of Polyneices under the penalty of death. Antigone is now determined to bury her brother and wants Ismene to help her. Ismene does not want to go against what the king has ordered and is fearful of what may become of her if she†¦show more content†¦She has no choice. Her death, if that is what it must come to in order to accomplish the burial of her brother, will be better than the death of her brother without her bravery, that is to say, a death without honor. When they part I smene tells her sister that she is unwise, and yet a loyal friend to those who love her. He told the sentry that he judged him to be a bribed soldier and that he could not return unless he found the person who had buried the body or told of whom it was that had bribed him. After this the horrified sentry and his men brushed off the sacred burial dust from the body and kept watch from a distance to see if the rebel would return to bury the body. Thus, many of the modern organizations implement the strategy of selection of the candidates by searching for their personal information in the social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. This is a debatable policy because the companies are often using the personal information of the employees to judge them and take decisions on recruitment or even dismiss them from their services(OSullivan, 2013). In this regard it can be said that under the Privacy Act and the Fair Work Act of Australia, it is unethical to use the personal information of the employees in order to judge a candidate. This is because of the fact that every human has the birth right to put up his own views about anything in his personal social media account. He can put any information about his organization or anything if he wishes to. This cannot be considered as anything illegal as everyone should have freedom of opinion in a democracy unless it amounts to any sedition against the government. Thus it cannot be considered as a good HRM practice to hire or fire employees based on their personal information put in social media accounts(Strandberg, 2009). The management of the firms have a different opinion on this. They believe that in a competitive dynamic environment, they cannot afford to take risks by selecting the wrong employees. They tend to trust the character and attitude of the employees based on their social media profiles. By studying the social media profiles of these candidates or employees, the employers get an idea about their likes, dislikes, kind of people they mix with, their hobbies and whether they have put up any offending information about their companies on the social media. However, it can be argued that it is not possible to judge an employee or a candidate in the process of selection by his social media information because the personal and professional lives may be different and there is no guarantee that the information shared on the social media sites by these persons are authentic. Therefore, it can be said that the practice of employee selection or rejection by the HRM of an organization based on the in formation provided in their social media accounts does not sound to be very logical and prudent(Stefan Hauptmann, 2012). The Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) formed a Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct in 2006. The purpose of this code is to make the Australian HRM much professional and ethical. The codes are to ensure that the organizations observe the sound principles of recruitment and selection, compensation, training and development, employee performance appraisal, employee termination and the various other tasks of the HR department. The code of conduct clearly sets that the HR of an organization can utilize any strategy of recruitment and selection or other HR roles but within the guidelines of those codes which should not be breached at any stage or else the company might have to face the legal consequences if a dissatisfied employee lodges a complaint in the court of law(Roth, 2013). The codes clearly suggest that it is not an ethical practice to spy on the personal data of the employees on their social media sites or to access that personal information or tamper with them. The codes also suggest that it is not a very sound practice to judge the candidates those are to be recruited or the employees those are currently working in the organization on the basis of the information shared in their social media accounts. The law suggests that the employees should be treated ethically and they should be considered as one of the most important human assets of the organization. Their needs and preferences should be given adequate care by the HRM department of all the companies in Australia(Vuori, 1997). As per the survey data provided by an important HR critique named Hammonds who conducted a research on the Hay Group that is an HR consultancy firm, the majority of the employees believed that the performance appraisal methods implemented in their organization were unfair and that the employer did not think about the wellbeing of the employees. According to Kochan, the HRM has failed to be considered as a holistic professional and ethical approach to select and retain employees. There are various potholes in the intentions of the HR professionals and the HRM principles observed. In this regard it can be argued that one cannot entirely deny the fact that there are biases in selection, recruitment, compensation and employee termination those are observed by many of the HRM professionals in the various modern organizations. There are loopholes in the system of performance appraisals also those are often found to be unfair and misleading. Thus, it cannot be said that the modern HRM has b een able to assume a totally just and ethical approach. In spite of several attempts by many eminent persons in this domain and even the government of various countries to observe strict HRM principles in the organizations, the unethical and unfair means are still resorted to and that is causing employee dissatisfaction and mistrust on the employers that is not a desirable situation(Jeanquart, 2011). The ethical point has to be discussed in this respect. Now a day it is found that the human resource department tries to access the personal details of the candidates from their social networking accounts. The ethical legislations do not allow this. The personal, non-professional and other details of the employees should not be accessed from the social networking sites. The Privacy Act recommends that the HR of the organization says that the personal and professional data of the employees should not be accessed from their social networking accounts. The Fair Work Act that has been amended to the Privacy Act also deals with the ethical issues of the employees regarding the use of the social networking sites in the work place. The privacy law in Australia guides the organization their extent of accessing the personal information of the workers in the private as well as public sectors (Burdon Telford, 2010). The law also defines the scope of the personal information. This is unethical when an organization tries to break the norms and follows the employees personal information from the online networking sites. Sorina Popa Laboratory Partner: Chris Paterson Objectives: The aims for this experiment are to carry out a number of qualitative procedures in order to identify different food traces such as starch, protein and glucose that are present or absent within the aqueous tests. Introduction: Food science is the application of biological, chemical and physical composition of food as well as the concepts that highlight food processing. The governance within the Food Science Industries are exceptionally strict when it comes to the quality and the safety of their manufactured products. The role of a Food Scientist is to examine the microbiological, biochemical and physical equities of food. The main three categories of food are proteins fats and carbohydrates. Benedict’s test was considered perfect for this experiment as this test is can detect a positive result for reducing monosaccharides or disaccharides sugars such as glucose and lactose. During the process of heating, the alkali in the Benedict’s reagent becomes highly reactive and it behaves as a strong reducing agent.The significant colour change that occurs from a clear blue colour to a brick red precipitate indicates a positive result for the presence of glucose within a food sample. The green/yellow colour change can indicate a vague presence of protein as well as the presence of glucose. Starch is an example of a polysaccharide that is found mostly within plants. Plants use starch to store energy.The Iodine Test is extremely sensitive and can detect up to 0.00002M of a solution tested at a temperature of 20 Â °C. However, if the sample’s pH is low, the iodine solution’s reactions wouldn’t occur with the sample solution tested. Iodine solution determines the presence of starch most easily when the cell walls are damaged and broken down in order to chemically react with the starch grains. In the presence of starch there is a colour change from Brown to Blue/Black. It is expected for starch to be present within potatoes, flour, certain vegetables and cereals. Proteina and amino acids are the building blocks of protein. The amino acids are linked by peptide bonds. Protein is highly found within meat, seeds and beans.The biuret test was considered ideal for this experiment as it can detect higher concentrations of protein.The reaction formed comes from an organic compound as its heated and a high temperature resulting to a positive test for protein. The biuret reagent is composed of diluted copper sulphate within a strong alkali.The colour change from blue to purple originates from the coordinate complex that is found between the cupric ions and the nitrogen atoms.The Bradford Test was also considered for this experiment as it its a rapid and highly sensitive method for testing for Protein. [1] Materials: The materials were as in the ITT Biology1 Food Analysis Protocols Manual. [2] Methods: There were 4 different experiments carried out in order to test for different components withing different food samples tested. The Iodine Test, Benedict Test, Biuret Test and Bradford Test were carried out as per Itt Biology1 Food Analysis Protocols Manual. The colour Green shows that there was another trace element as well as the presence of Glucose. For the Iodine test the colour obtained was Yellow towards Brown which indicates there was a negative result for the presence of starch. There was a negative result for the presence of protein using the Biuret Reagent as the original colour Blue remained the same. However, when this solution was tested for the presence of protein using Bradford Reagent, there was a colour change from Brown to Light Blue indicating that there are small traces of protein present within this solution. This leads to a conclusion that solution A can be classified as being High Energy Glucose Drink diluted 1 in 20. Solution B: From the data obtained it showed to have the presence of Glucose as the colour obtained was Green. The colour Green tells us that traces of protein has been present as well as Glucose. To sustain this statement, when solution B was tested using Bradford Reagent , it showed a positive result for the presence of protein due to the colour change from Brown to Blue. However there was no presence of Starch within this solution as the colour remained the iodine brown/yellow original colour. This leads to the conclusion that solution B might have been the Diet Carbonated Lemon Lime Drink diluted 1 in 20. Solution C: Looking at the data obtained, Reducing sugars are present within this solution as the colour changed from Blue to Green. The Iodine test showed a negative result for the presence of Starch as the colour remained Brown. However, traces of Protein was present when the Bradford Test was carried out. This signifies that the solution C can be the Carbonated Diet Lemon and Lime Drink diluted 1 in 1000.According to the expected results, the Carbonated Lemon and Lime Drink diluted 1 in 1000 showed to have a positive result for Reducing sugar, and Protein. However, since this solution was diluted 1 in 1000, it’s possible that the presence of protein didn’t show because of the insufficient amount of protein. The Bradford Test showed to have the ability to indicate small traces of protein. Solution D: Analysing the data obtained the wasn’t any presence of Glucose in the Reducing Sugars Assay as the colour remained blue. There wasn’t any Starch present when Iodine solution was added in the Solution D due to no change in the colour i.e. Brown. However, the Biuret Test indicated a positive result for the presence of protein due to the colour change from Blue to Purple. As the Biuret test is known to detect large traces of protein, the presence of protein also came positive when the Bradford Reagent was used. Looking at the different solutions and their expected results, Solution D can be considered to be Sports Supplement diluted 1 in 10 since it is said it’s based on protein and not so much Carbohydrate based. This can be the reason why the Iodine and Benedict Test showed negative results. Solution E From the results obtained it indicated that there are traces of Glucose as the colour changed from Blue to Yellow/Brown. The colour brown isn’t the presence only for the presence of glucose which is orange. There are traces of a different component within the Solution E. There aren’t any traces of Starch when the Iodine Solution was added to a sample of Solution E. However, the extra trace element that appeared during the Bradford Test.The colour changed from Brown to dark Blue signifying traces of protein. When the solution was tested for protein using the Biuret Reagent, it showed a negative result as there was no colour change. As a conclusion, the Solution E appears to be Cow’s Milk diluted 1 in 20. Solution F: Analysing the data obtained from carrying out different aqueous procedures, it showed that there is a negative result for the presence of Reducing Sugars as the colour remained Blue after boiling process. There was also a negative result for the presence of Starch when Iodine solution was added and the colour remained the colour of Iodine solution i.e. Brown/Yellow. However, there was a positive result using both Biuret and Bradford Reagents as the colour changes to Purple when Biuret Reagent was used and the colour changed to dark Blue when Bradford Reagent was used. Comparing the result from this solution to the other expected solutions, Solution F can be looked upon to be Liquidised Cauliflower Filtered and Diluted 1 in 5. Solution G: From the results obtained it showed that there was a positive result for the presence of Glucose as there was a colour change from Blue to Brown. The colour brown also indicates there is another trace element present within this solution as well as Glucose. In the Iodine Test there was a positive result for the presence of starch as the colour change was Orange. This is an unusual colour as the actual positive colour indication for the presence of starch is Blue/Black. However, the colour orange can indicate there are more than one trace elements that are present within this solution. When the Bradford Test was carried out, a negative result was obtained as the colour did not change in Biuret and Bradford Test. From the data obtained, Solution G can be Diet Carbonated Lemon and Lime Drink diluted 1 in 10. Solution H: From the results obtained it showed a negative result for reducing sugar as the colour remained Blue. However, there was a positive result for the presence of starch as the colour changed from Brown/yellow to Orange. There was also a positive result when the solution was tested for protein. When Biuret Reagent was used the colour didn’t change which leads to a negative result but when the Bradford Reagent was used there was a positive result as the colour changed into Light Blue. This can mean that the Solution H can be classified to be Wheat flour 0.5% w/v solution. Conclusion: The purpose of these Qualitative experiments was to analyse in depth the aqueous solutions given and tested for the presence of starch, traces of protein and for reducing sugars. The data collected from each solution was compared with the expected results from specific solutions from which some were diluted more than 5 times. The results obtained were remarkably close to the results expected. This concludes that the overall assays undertaken were a success due to the results obtained and discussions made. Anna Karenina - The Complex Character of Constantine Dmitrich Levin    In the novel Anna Karenina, written by Leo Tolstoy, both major and minor characters played important roles through out the story. One protagonist, Constantine Dmitrich Levin, caught my interest as being a compassionate, moral character. Constantine Dmitrich Levin is a complex character whose direct and indirect characterization emphasizes a search for balance. Constantine Dmitrich Levin, often called Levin or Constantine, later Kostya by Kitty, is a farmer in eighteenth century Russia. He enjoys his work and avoids the city at all costs. He is madly in love with Princess Catherine Alexandrovna Shcherbatskaya, normally called Kitty, but she rejects him in hoping that Count Alexey Kirilich Vronsky, normally named Vronsky, a man who has shown great interest in her, will propose marriage. Both are discarded but reconcile their feelings and eventually marry.       The novel Anna Karenina directly depicts Levin as a strongly built, honest worker, who dislikes the immoral views of the aristocracy. Levin enjoys his choice of work in the fields and begins to trust the peasants who assist him in his farming duties. He believes that working outside the cities provide a more noble lifestyle. Levin considers peasants to be more independent that those in urban areas and considers the peasants more morally correct.       Seeing the waiters busy over washing up the crockery and setting in order their plates and wine-glasses, seeing their calm and cheerful faces, Levin felt an unexpected sense of relief as though he had come out of a stuffy room into the fresh air (Tolstoy, 695, part 6, chapter 28).    Work p... ...her; he wishes the peasants to control their lives with self-interests, not by the interests of the government because the general welfare may not benefit the peasants or him.       Of the two protagonists of the novel, Anna Karenin and Constantine Levin, Levin is the one I admire most. Directly depicted as an honest, moral man, Levin is well liked among people he meets and does not try to escape to a fantasy world as Anna did. The novel goes in-depth by indirectly depicting him to be a philosophical thinker and an atheist, who is torn apart by his beliefs. The manner Tolstoy describes Levin is appealing, for I admire all of the qualities he possesses and that is why I chose him for my character of study. By using both direct and indirect characterizations, Tolstoy aimed to depict Levin as the role model for Russians in the eighteenth century.
